In yesterday’s IPL match, young Indian cricketer and also the skipper of Gujarat Titans Shubman Gill has been fined a hefty sum of ₹12 lakhs by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching the IPL code of conduct. His team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate in their second match against the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings.
As per an official statement released by IPL, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on March 26. As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Gill was fined ₹12 lakhs.
What is the slow over rate rule and why is it necessary?
During a t20 match, the bowling side is expected to maintain an over rate of 14.11 and complete their 20 overs in the time frame of 1 hour 30 mins in which the two strategic timeouts are also included. In case the bowling side fails to maintain this pace, it is reprimanded by the conducting authority for the breach in the code of conduct and thus varying fines are levied on the players of the bowling team. The slow over rate rule is crucial for maintaining the tempo and momentum of the game. Delays in bowling can disrupt the rhythm of the match, inconvenience spectators, and affect television schedules. By enforcing strict adherence to the prescribed time limits, cricketing authorities aim to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for players and fans alike.
Past Incidents of Captains being penalized for slow over rate in IPL
In the 17th edition of the T20 Indian Premier League, this was the first instance of a team being slammed for maintaining a slow over rate. Many such instances can be traced down in the history of IPL.
In the previous season of IPL, the RCB skipper Faf du Plessis was fined a whooping INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate in its match against Lucknow Super Giants. In a similar trend, David Warner has also been levied Rs 12 lakh for the Delhi Capitals slow over rate against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the 2021 IPL – Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Eoin Morgan, and Virat Kohli – were also ordered to forfeit INR 12 lakhs each due to the breach in the league’s code of conduct.
Highlights of last night’s match in Chepauk
The match was held at the home ground of CSK, Chidambaram Stadium also known as the Chepauk Stadium on Tuesday. The guest team, Gujarat Titans, won the toss and opted to bowl first. The bowling order of GT fails terribly as CSK clubs a giant score of 206 in the first inning. New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the team an explosive start with a 62-run opening partnership.
This score was further accelerated as Shivam Dube scored a half-century by hitting five fiery sixes and creamed two fantastic fours.
Following up the same pace, the recently bought Sameer Rizvi also went on to hit two sixes in his first-ever IPL career. After bagging their first win against Mumbai Indians, GT fails to meet the expectations of their fans due to their devastating defeat in the recent match.
As per the ANI report, Gill’s form has dipped after taking over the captaincy of the Gujarat franchise as he has not been able to score runs that consistently. Gill the orange cap holder of the previous IPL season, who recently played for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 is not seen in a very good form since the start of this season.
