Paris St Germain beat Lyon 2-1 in the French Cup final to complete Kylian Mbappé’s domestic double in his final appearance for the club on Saturday.
In the first half, French winger Ousmane Dembele and Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored for PSG. Lyon defender Jake O’Brien scored a consolation goal in the second half as PSG won the league and cup for the first time since 2020 as they completed a record domestic treble while also lifting the defunct League Cup.
Mbappé celebrated with a big roar after the final whistle. With the same wide smile on his face, he hugged and hugged his teammates. Excited PSG staff picked up Mbappé and threw him in the air.
“You feel the weight of things a little more because you realize it’s over,” Mbappé said. “When I said goodbye to the Parc des Princes, there were still games left, so you still focus on what’s ahead. I have nothing left at PSG. But I’m thrilled to come away with the trophy. “
Despite losing in the final, Lyon still qualified for the Europa League, finishing sixth in the league. Dembele opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he headed home. A cross from Nuno MendesRuiz doubled their lead when O’Brien stopped his header past Bradley Barcola and Warren in the opening minutes, but misjudged the flight of the ball as Mendes made it 2-1.
PSG have struggled in the air this season and in the 64th, the keeper came close to a second corner, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped the Lyon left-back’s header over Nicolas Tagliafico’s bar. Lyon joined the league in December but collected more points than any other club in the second half of the season, finishing sixth.
Mbappé struggled to find the net in his last game for PSG. A curl from the edge of the penalty shootout didn’t bother Perri in the 20th set and he flew over the bar in the 41st set. In seven seasons with PSG, Mbappe won 15 trophies, including four French Cups.
Although Mbappe did not add to his tally, he is PSG’s all-time top scorer with 256 points in 308 games.” I’m happy to be a part of its history and to be a little part of it,” said Mbappé.
