Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in for a third consecutive term as head of a coalition government on Sunday after two full terms in which the BJP won a majority on its own.

The Modi 3.0 Council of Ministers, sworn in today, has 30 ministers, five ministers of state with independent posts and 36 ministers of state.

The Modi 2.0 Council of Ministers, sworn in on 31 May 2019, consisted of 24 minister-level ministers, nine ministers of state with independent posts and 24 chief ministers. Modi, 73, was as good as the first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who won the 1952, 1957, and 1962 general elections.

Modi retained power, but the BJP surprisingly fell short in the elections of Lok Sabha, fell to 240 out of 303, well short of a majority of 272. Before taking oath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday interacted with MPs who were elected to his Cabinet and Council of Ministers.

The prime ministerial candidate hosted a routine dinner at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg in the capital ahead of the grand ceremony on Sunday evening.

BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar were oath in as cabinet ministers. Party president JP Nadda returned to the government after five years, while former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar are fresh faces in the Modi government.

BJP leaders Piyush Goyal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav, who were earlier in the Rajya Sabha but have now been elected to the Lok Sabha, were among those who remained ministers.

Former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Virendra Kumar, Prahlad Joshi, Giriraj Singh and Jual Oram, all from the BJP, were among the sworn-in ministers.

President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to them.

Among the BJP allies who failed to get a single majority this time are JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, HAM (Secular) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, JD(U) leader Lalan Singh and also a TDP leader K Ram Mohan Naidu was sworn in as a minister.

Anurag Thakur, Smriti Irani, Parshottam Rupala, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, they are the missing cabinet ministers from Modi 3.0.
