Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday declares West Bengal as the “safest state ” in the country while indirectly refusing Prime Minister Modi’s accusation on Sandeshkhali reports.
She slammed the comments made by the PM and said that the reports of atrocities on women at Sandeshkhali were misleading and that Bengal was the safest state for women. Also indirectly accusing PM Modi of spreading Bhuo Sandesh (fake news) over the Sandeshkhali issues and creating false images in the public head about Trinamool Congress.
Accused PM of spreading fake news
Mamata Banerjee claims, “All five fingers in the palm are not alike. Sometimes we are not aware of many things. I do not hesitate to arrest any political leader who committed a crime even if it means arresting Trinamool Congress leaders if found guilty.
BJP’s job is to slam cases on the TMC leaders, send ED and CBI after them get them arrested, and lock them in jail. I want to ask them, why are they so angry with Bengal. On Wednesday, BJP leaders said that women are tortured here the most. But I challenge them that Bengal is the safest state for women. It is also the only standing state where women are safe. Women don’t get justice in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur.” while addressing a gathering after leading a procession on the eve of Women’s Day
Mamata Banerjee’s remarks
“Bengal is the only place(where) women are safe, it is the safest place!”, the CM says. Her counter statements came a day after Prime Minister Modi said that the storm of Sandeshkhali would rage across West Bengal. Sandeshkhali has been making headlines for the past several weeks over allegations of land grabbing cases and sexual assault raised by locals, particularly concerning women. Reports says that even during the day, a group of women BJP leaders were stopped from visiting Sandeshkhali by police.
Mamata Banerjee also pointed out the the violence’s against women in Manipur and Hathras and questioned why the ruling party BJP has been silent on these serious issues. She also noted the allegations raised by women wrestlers against a a sitting BJP MP and former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhuhsan Sharan Singh.
As the Lok Sabha polls elections are close, the political parties are on their toes to keep their reputation clean and same strategy is being applied by Chief Minister of Bengal as the political parties are vying for the support of women of West Bengal.
Attacking the ruling party at the Centre for failing to curb violence in the states it is in power, CM also called upon a Sundry from a TMC rally to create a “political tornado” to save India from BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
She also broke silence in the gathering on the former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhay joining the BJP. “Sitting in the chair of a judge, he is talking about joining the BJP? I am happy that the mask has been exposed,” she said. She added that the former judge has been constantly hurling abuses at her nephew and Trinamool MP, Abhishek Banerjee.
She even accuses Mr. Gangopadhay of playing with the lives of thousands of students, “People will give verdict on you. Wherever you contest, I will ensure that students are pitted against you,” Mamata says.
Before addressing the rally, the CM led a parade from College Street and Esplanade with the women leaders of her party on the eve of International Women’s day, preponing the event from Friday due to Shivratri celebration.
Ms. Mamata Banerjee also met some women from the Sandeshkhali who too participated in the rally. In a veiled dig at the PM’s comment on “anti-women “jibe on the TMC a day before, the CM alleged, “Many Bhuo Sandesh( in English Sandesh means News) on Sandeshkhali.
On the March-10th rally of the TMC at the Brigade Parade Ground, Ms. Mamata Banerjee said, “Bengal knows how to protest and resist. All have to roar and bring a political tornado against the BJP to save Bengal and the country in future.”
