The first parliament session of the 18th Lok Sabha will begin on June 24 and the Rajya Sabha on June 27.

The Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government will pick a Lok Sabha speaker during the first Parliament session starting June 24 and ending July 3.

Parliamentary Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Wednesday that the first parliament session of the 18th Lok Sabha will begin on June 24 to take oath or confirmation.

During the first three days of the first parliament session of the 18th Lok Sabha, the newly elected leaders take oath or confirm their membership in the Lok Sabha and elect the Speakers.

The session ends on July 3rd.

President Draupadi Murmu will address the joint session of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on June 27 and is likely to outline the new government’s agenda for the next five years.

“The first parliament session of the 18th Lok Sabha will be convened from 24/06/24 to 03/07/24 for swearing-in/confirmation of new members, election of Speaker, Speaker’s speech and debate,” said Rijiju on post X.

He said that the 264th session of Rajya Sabha will also begin on June 27 and end on July 3.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to present his Council of Ministers to Parliament after the President’s address on June 27.

An aggressive opposition is expected during the President’s vote of thanks debate, which will try to corner the NDA government on various issues. The prime minister responds to the debate on the president’s speech of thanks in both chambers of Parliament.

The last session of the 17th Lok Sabha (Budget Session) was held from 31 January to 10 February 2024. The Lok Sabha held 274 sessions during which 202 bills were introduced and 222 bills were passed.

The Rajya Sabha held 271 sessions during which 31 bills were introduced and 220 bills were passed. A total of 221 bills were passed in both houses and became laws during the 17th Lok Sabha.

One of the major agreements during the 17th Lok Sabha was the repeal of certain provisions of Article 370 and the order of the President to ensure equal opportunities for all sections of the society in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in terms of applicability of the law the provisions of the Constitution of India and all socio-economic legislations were restored, ensuring rule of law and justice.

Further, to ensure better governance and curb terrorism, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

During the 17th Lok Sabha, one of the most important agreements was the repeal of certain provisions of Article 370 and related Presidential Orders to ensure equal opportunities for all sections of society in Jammu and Kashmir, especially to restore the application of the provisions of the constitution of India and all socio-economic legislation to ensure rule of law and justice.

Further, to ensure better governance and curb terrorism, the states of Jammu and Kashmir were reorganized to form two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

In addition, three important laws relating to the criminal justice system to ensure victim-centered justice namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 replacing the Indian Penal Code was passed by both houses, 1860 parliament against the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
