“The Dagestan Attack” took place on Sunday, June 23 in Russia’s Dagestan in which policemen and civilians were killed in a series of ‘terrorist attacks’. At least 15 police officers have been killed in the series of attacks in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan.
The shootings occurred on Sunday at two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a traffic police station in the coastal city of Derbent and Dagestan’s capital, Makhachkala, and civilians were also killed and wounded, the report said.
A Brutal Onslaught: The Dagestan Attack
The attacks began almost simultaneously in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala. In Derbent, a group of armed men opened fire on a synagogue and a church, setting both buildings ablaze. According to state media reports, terrified residents described hearing gunshots and explosions before witnessing the flames erupt from the houses of worship.
Nearly concurrently, reports emerged of an attack on a church and a traffic police post in the Dagestani capital, Makhachkala. Witnesses reported seeing heavily armed men engaging in a firefight with security personnel before disappearing into the city.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee swiftly declared the attacks acts of terrorism. Security forces launched a counter-terrorism operation, cordoning off affected areas and conducting a manhunt for the perpetrators.

The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated criminal cases under the article related to terrorist attacks and shootings and a counter-terrorist operation regime was introduced in Dagestan, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.
Dagestan, located in the North Caucasian region, is one of the country’s most linguistically and ethnically diverse regions.
Victims in the Dagestan Attack
The official death toll from the attack is still unknown; estimates range from 15 to more than 20. The confirmed dead include at least six police officers, a 66-year-old Orthodox priest, and several civilians.
Medical personnel transported at least 12 injured people to nearby hospitals, some of whom remain in critical condition. The attack sent shock waves throughout the region, with residents expressing horror and anger.
Politicians across Russia, including President Vladimir Putin, have condemned the violence and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
The attack has also caused psychological damage to the affected communities. Many residents are suffering from feelings of grief, fear and anger. Religious leaders play a key role in providing comfort and guidance to those affected.
The significance of Dagestan
Dagestan, with a majority Muslim population, is home to more than 50 different ethnicities. It is also known as “the Mountain of Languages” or “Mountain of Nationalities”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long held the North Caucasus region up as a poster child of integration and loyalty to the Russian state.
More recently, Russia’s Federal Security Service arrested four people in Dagestan over Moscow’s Crocus City Hall attacks, pointing to Russian concerns over separatism in the region.
Dagestan is a place where Islam, Christianity and Judaism coexist peacefully. Synagogues, churches and mosques stand side by side as evidence of this tolerance. These attacks destroy that trust and leave religious communities feeling vulnerable and afraid.
Russian Government Response to the Dagestan Attack
The Russian government‘s response to the Dagestan attack was multifaceted, focusing on immediate security measures, investigations, public statements, and possible long-term strategies. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee immediately declared the attack a terrorist act.
Security forces launched a major counter-terrorism operation, deploying heavily armed personnel to secure the affected areas and apprehend the perpetrators. This operation may include roadblocks, building searches, and checkpoints.
A comprehensive investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and to uncover the motives and connections behind the attack. The investigation is likely to require cooperation between federal security agencies, such as the FSB and SVR, as well as local law enforcement.
However, the effectiveness of the approach by Russian Government will depend on striking a balance between security and human rights, and fostering genuine dialogue between different religious communities.
