Tech giant Apple Inc. is poised to unleash its much-anticipated new product, the Vision Pro mixed reality headset, in a launch event at its flagship 5th Avenue retail store in New York City on February 2, 2024.
Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted a photo of the iconic glass cube Apple Store all dressed up ahead of the big reveal, sparking excitement among tech enthusiasts.
The Vision Pro marks Apple’s first foray into the emerging mixed reality space, which blends augmented and virtual reality. With a sleek new design and innovative features like spatial computing, hand tracking and expansive 3D apps, the Vision Pro aims to revolutionize how people interact with technology.
Apple’s “Breakthrough” User Experience
Unlike existing virtual reality headsets that fully immerse users in a digital world, the Vision Pro enables you to seamlessly blend 3D digital content with the physical environment.
“Whether you’re watching a movie, contacting a colleague across the globe or designing your dream house, the Vision Pro enables you to interact with technology in a natural, human-centric manner never possible before” says Phil Schiller, Apple’s Marketing Chief. You can simply use your eyes, hands and voice to navigate menus, resize apps and even type or draw in the air. This creates a much more intuitive and user-friendly experience, akin to having a personal computer screen that isn’t bound to a fixed display.
Limitless Digital Canvas
A key benefit offered by the Vision Pro is the ability to break free of a limited screen size. The headset offers an infinite digital canvas onto which 3D apps can be overlaid, arranged and scaled to any size in physical space.
This transforms activities like browsing photos, watching videos, playing games or using creative tools. Now they can be expanded to fill an entire room and adjusted to the perfect comfortable viewing size.
“It’s like having a portable IMAX theatre or the universe’s largest iPad,” said tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities. “Your digital content is no longer bounded by the edges of a fixed screen. The possibilities are limitless.”
The Vision Pro will launch with over 1 million apps tailored for mixed reality, over 600 of which are immersive 3D experiences built specifically for the device. Leading apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Xcode will enable new creative workflows.
Advanced Technology in a Sleek Design
To enable its groundbreaking features, the Vision Pro packs custom silicon including Apple’s new R1 processor which drives intensity-scaling 3D graphics.
The wearable device integrates 12 cameras, 5 silicon-based sensors, spatial detection technologies and a high-resolution retinal display system with over 23 million pixels per eye, resulting in crystal clear visuals.
“Apple has managed to cram an incredible amount of technology into a compact, aesthetically pleasing form factor,” said tech analyst Ben Wood of CCS Insight.
The Vision Pro headset weighs just 0.83 pounds and balances the advanced tech with an elegant design featuring high quality fabrics and aluminum. Special insert lenses also allow glasses-wearers to comfortably use the device.
Price and Availability
The Apple Vision Pro will be available starting February 3rd in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage configurations priced at $3,499, $3,699 and $3,899 respectively.
Customers can purchase online for delivery and in Apple retail stores. The headset comes in space grey and silver colors.
This launch comes on the heels of slowing sales growth for Apple’s core product, the iPhone. The company hopes the Vision Pro finally cracks the elusive mixed reality market and opens up new revenue streams beyond smartphones.
“The Vision Pro is Apple’s next big bet,” said GlobalData analyst Emma Mohr-Mckay. “If it succeeds, it could drive hardware sales growth and enable new software and services subscriptions over time.”
