The much-awaited 96th Academy Awards ceremony was conducted at the Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles on Monday at 4 A.M (IST). This year’s Oscars ran longer than most viewers probably considered reasonable. But the lengthy ceremony marked the history with epic films winning and with more epic surprises.
Epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer bagged seven awards, including Best Picture earning Christopher Nolan Best Director, Cillian Murphy Best Actor, and Robert Downey Jr for best supporting role.
In the Best Actress category, Emma Stone bagged the Oscar for her performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. In the category for best supporting actress, The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home the award.
Cristopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer entered with a total of 13 nominations in the race of Oscars 2024. The Best Picture which Oppenheimer won had witnessed a rather tight competition among prominent films such as American Fiction, The Holdovers, Barbie, The Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Poor Things , Past Lives and The Zone of Interest.
India received a significant setback as the Canadian documentary “To Kill a Tiger“, directed by Indian-born Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, lost in the Documentary Feature Film Category. Meanwhile, Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days in Mariupol recorded victory in this category.
Controversy over Kimmel’s joke
Jimmy Kimmel hosted the award ceremony fourth time marking his name in the Oscar’s board itself in the second consecutive year. But this year too, Kimmel made headline with his “jokes”.
The one in strictly ‘maybe’ category in his dig at nudity in Poor Things, which was clearly aimed at Emma Stone for which she responded with an eye-roll.
On X (formerly known as Twitter) a cold war emerged where some people came out in support for Stone but there were few also in Jimmy’s corner.
One user wrote,” I mean he wasn’t wrong lol, half of the movie was just nudity. The whole point of monologues is about having fun and teasing people anyway.” Another wrote,” Honestly Jimmy Kimmel has been awful he already pissed me off with the “movies are too long “nonsense and the “animations for kids” crap.
Further, a rather ironical surprise “nudity” by John Cena as he announced Poor Things’ win for the Best Costume Design, The Zone of Interest writer/ director Jonathan Glazer- who eon Best International Feature- gave a pointed and powerful speech about the through line between his film and the ongoing conflicts in Gaza.
No surprise that John Cena is walking on stage naked at the Oscars during prime time TV that children are most likely watching.
This is not just a humiliation ritual — the Hollywood pedophiles, rapists and perverts are certainly getting off on this. I’m sure Jimmy Kimmel is as… pic.twitter.com/4WuT9IYSMA
