The deal, finalized at the headquarters on Friday, values the AI startup at an astonishing $86 billion – making it one of the most valuable private companies in the world.
Employee Liquidity Event
The employee tender offer provides long-awaited liquidity for OpenAI staff by allowing them to cash out a portion of their equity in the company.
This type of transaction is not a traditional funding round that brings in new capital. Rather, it is a secondary sale that enables employees to monetize their shares while preserving the ownership and structure of the company.
The specifics of how the deal was structured and what percentage of employee shares were sold have not been disclosed. However, tender offers of this scale in the startup world are exceedingly rare events.
Rising AI Valuations
OpenAI’s astronomical $86 billion valuation speaks to the soaring interest and optimism around artificial intelligence breakthroughs.
The tender offer was initially slated to happen last year but was delayed following upheaval at the company.
In November 2022, OpenAI’s board ousted CEO Sam Altman, only to rehire him soon after and start the process of rebuilding the board.
Now with the employee liquidity event complete, OpenAI has also been in discussions to raise new venture funding at an even higher valuation of over $100 billion.
Technological Milestones
OpenAI’s rising valuation comes on the heels of a string of breakthroughs from the company over the last year. In late 2022, they unveiled ChatGPT – a conversational assistant that stunned the tech world with its ability to engage in thoughtful written dialogue, answer follow-up questions, and even write computer code.
The launch of ChatGPT kicked off an frenzy in Silicon Valley and beyond, as companies raced to advance and apply the technology. So far, OpenAI has emerged as a leader – inking deals to bring in $13 billion from Microsoft, in addition to other investors, to fund their research.
Earlier this week, the company again made headlines with the unveiling of Sora – a text-to-video generator that can create complex, photorealistic video clips up to a minute long from simple text descriptions.
Sora is able to produce coherent scenes with multiple characters, dynamic backgrounds, and cinematic movements that remain visually consistent throughout the generated video.

OpenAI Video Future : Sora
OpenAI has not disclosed full specifics on exactly how Sora works or the techniques used to train such a sophisticated model.
The company is still in the “red teaming” phase with Sora, running adversarial testing to identify and mitigate potential harms or inappropriate outputs before granting wider access.
For now, OpenAI is providing select visual artists, designers, and filmmakers with early access to Sora to gather feedback on how to advance the technology in useful ways for creative professionals.
Sora represents an impressive leap forward in AI video generation capabilities compared to existing tools:
- Synthesia is known for producing the most realistic AI avatars through lifelike gestures, lip syncing, and voice models.
- Runway offers a versatile set of tools for high-quality text-to-video generation.
- OpusClip specializes in repurposing long-form videos into short, social media-optimized clips.
- inVideo is adept at picking relevant stock footage based on scripts.
- Fliki stands out for its user-friendly interface and extensive video libraries.
- Pictory can generate full scripts from text prompts.
- Visla provides intuitive editing controls.
- Designs.ai by Inmagine offers access to large multi-media libraries.
As text-to-video capabilities rapidly advance thanks to models like Sora, looks poised to fundamentally transform video production and open up new frontiers of creativity and expression through AI-human collaboration.
