The Republic of Maldives is an independent nation Maldives is most beautiful place where people go for their vacation and release their stress tension. But unfortunately, the beautiful place is facing the threat of disappearing and depletion of drinking water. Almost 5.4 lakhs of Maldives population are at risk. All these due to of sea level caused by climate change.
The Situation of Maldives
The country is made-up of over 1100 coral island that are mostly less than one meter above the sea level. There are some recent projects and reports which claims that by 2050 Maldives’s 80% portion will be under the water or will be affected by the water and no one will be able to stay there. Depleted drinking water resources is also a big issue.
Government Handling Situation
Government of Maldives has listed out all the solution to protect the people and territory some of the possible solution which is related to the issue.
President Mohammed Muizz talked about the discarded plan relocating the situation somewhere safe then the island the PM of planning to construct an elevated Island to protect so Maldives territory there has been calling for international support and cooperation to address the root causes of the climate change like global warming reduce the clean gas effect. He has also committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2030 by becoming a carbon neutral country by 2050. To cope up with these challenges current president is now seeking $500 million in foreign funding for coastal protection.
Controlling the Causes
the former president Mohammed Nasheed. He’s the leading voice for climate justice and equality. He also organized an underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 to draw the attention to the threat of rising sea levels. He advocated for renewable energy resources and low carbonate development strategies.
Coral Reefs
The coral reefs of the Maldives are essential to the islands’ natural defense against sea level rise. For instance, despite rising temperatures and bleaching events, some research indicates that coral reefs in the Maldives and other places have stayed steady or even expanded in size in recent decades. This is due to the possibility that storms and floods would deposit silt onto the islands, or that the coral reefs will produce surplus sediment and grow taller.
Artificial Islands to Elevate.
President Muizzu, a British-educated civil engineer are overseeing the building artificial islands to elevate its land and accommodate its growing population. Another former prime minister, Abdulla Yameen, ousted in 2018, Had a different approach. He wanted to generate funds by building artificial islands and renting out as existing islands these are for geoengineering projects. He signed agreement with Dutch company to develop floating facilities. For example, Hulhumale is an island that was created by pumping sand from the seafloor onto a coral platform and is now the fourth-largest island in the country. It is designed to rise two meters above sea level and house up to 200,000 people in the future.
FORTRESS
The pristine beach Islands of Maldives always attracts the tourist. But now is filled by uncertainty, densely populated cities are shielded by fortress-like walls, leaving the islands exposed.
POINT OF VEIW
Not only Maldives but in many countries, many coastal regions are in danger. Many reports say that in case the water level increases, it will soon take many parts of the land under the sea levels. It is caused by the green gas effect, pollution and increase in temperature and many more. We need to open our eyes before the situation get worse and we lose what we have. Government needs to take important steps. We need try on our level.
