The JMM-led government in Jharkhand, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, won a vote of confidence in the assembly on Monday as opposition members walked out.
A total of 45 parliamentarians voted in favor of the motion of confidence, including named member Glen Joseph Galstaun.
BJP and AJSU legislators walked out of the House as the voting began. The BJP-led opposition has 24 legislators from the saffron party and three from the AJSU party.
After winning the vote of confidence, Soren said: “Today everyone again witnessed the unity and strength of the governing alliance. I thank the Speaker and all the MLAs of the alliance.”
He said that since 2019, the JMM-led alliance has been strong in coming to power following constitutional procedures and it was seen again during the day.
The Prime Minister said in his confidence speech in the Assembly: “The behavior of BJP legislators could be seen after meeting with me.
The recently concluded Lok Sabha elections put a mirror in their face. In the upcoming assembly elections, they will face JMM- with strong opposition from the i-led Union,” the CM said.
Talking about the confidence vote, Opposition leader Amar Bauri claimed that the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance government has fulfilled none of its promises in the last five years.
Earlier, BJP legislators rushed to the well and sought permission from speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto to allow MLA Bhanu Pratap Sah to speak, but the speaker refused.
75 deputies were present in the assembly during the voting. Independent legislator Saryu Roy abstained.
The ruling alliance includes JMM, Congress, and RJD, while it is supported from outside by a lone Liberation Legislator of CPI (ML).
JMM-led alliance
After the Lok Sabha elections, the strength of the JMM-led alliance has dropped to 45 MPs in the 81-member Parliament, of which 27 are from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, 17 from the Congress, and one from the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Two JMM MLAs – Nalin Soren and Joba Majhi – are now MPs, while Jama legislator Sita Soren resigned to contest the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.
The JMM expelled two other legislators from the party – Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda and Boriyo MLA Lobin Hembrom.
Similarly, BJP’s strength in the Assembly has come down to 24, as two of its right-wingers — Dhulu Mahto (Baghmara) and Manish Jaiswal (Hazaribag) — are now MLAs. Mandu MLA Jaiprakash Bhai Patel was expelled by the saffron party after he joined the Congress.
The current strength of the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly is 76. The ruling JMM-Congress-RJD alliance handed over a support list of 44 MLAs to the governor when Hemant Soren staked his claim to form the government on July 3.
JMM executive president Hemant Soren was sworn in as the 13th chief minister on July 4, a day after his predecessor Champai Soren resigned.
Hemant Soren was released from jail on June 28 after the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam. He resigned as chief minister shortly before the law enforcement agency arrested him on January 31.
