India sets ambitious plan for 6G
India Mobile Congress 2023 (IMC) witnessed the inauguration of 100 5G laboratories strategically positioned in prestigious engineering institutions nationwide by the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The event occurred at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan. This venue recently hosted the G20 Summit, garnering significant attention as a hub for innovation and technological advancements. The event was attended by key figures such as Airtel Chief Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla, Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani, and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Launching the seventh instalment of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) was the platform for disclosing India’s ambitious ventures into the realm of 6G technology. Notably, the Prime Minister expressed pride in not only expanding 5G but also positioning the country as a leader in the domain of 6G.
Remarkable achievements of 5G in India
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared insights into the country’s phenomenal progress in mobile broadband speed, marking a noteworthy uprise from the 118th to the 43rd position.
Additionally, he commended India’s exceptional achievement in swiftly deploying 5G mobile telephony, boasting an impressive infrastructure of 400,000 5G base stations within a mere year of its introduction. In just one year since the introduction of 5G, almost four lakh 5G base stations are currently operational. They effectively cover 97% of the cities and over 80% of the population.
Prime Minister Modi underlined the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to prioritising widespread access to capital, resources, and technology for all citizens.
His speech also mentioned significant milestones, including Google’s declaration of producing its Pixel phone in India. Additionally, he took pride in announcing the current manufacturing processes for Apple’s iPhone 15 and Samsung’s Fold 5 phones within the country. He expressed satisfaction with Made-in-India mobiles’ growing popularity and success, underscoring the nation’s advancement as a pivotal hub for producing state-of-the-art technology.
Prime Minister Modi extensively covered various technological domains, spanning telecommunications, cutting-edge technology, connectivity, and emerging sectors. He highlighted the impending transformation in 6G telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, semiconductor technology, aerial systems (drones), and the space industry. According to him, these changes are set to usher in a future markedly distinct from the present.

The India Mobile Congress (IMC) stands as the premier telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia, co-organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

A noteworthy addition to this year’s congress is the unveiling of “Aspire,” a groundbreaking startup program hosted by the India Mobile Congress. Positioned as a catalyst for innovation and accelerated growth, Aspire aims to cultivate an environment conducive to creativity and forging meaningful connections among startups, investors, and established enterprises.
